PER for Physical Education and Recreation courses

Number coder

The first digits indicates year of study e.g. 1st year (100 level)’2nd year (200 level), third year (300 levels) and fourth year (400 level) respectively.

Second digit indicates subject area.
Third digit indicates serial number of the course within the special area in the department

-Prospect /Job opportunities

A natural union, exists between the two-course areas making up the department. Consequently graduates from the two options in the department have almost equal footing regarding the job opportunities open to them. This is by virtue of the opportunities offered due to the integration of courses from both departments since neither health nor physical education can be effectively studied in isolation from the other. After all one’s level of physical fitness and alertness in carrying out daily tasks and leisure time pursuit depends solely on his level of health (well being). Conversely one’s health status is a summation of his physical, mental and social well-being.

Specifically, students who successfully complete their programme in health education have opportunities to teach in schools (nursery through tertiary level) health institutions, hospitals, rehabilitation centres); media houses (health spots on radio and television stations, health columns or corners on pages of newspapers and health magazines now making impacts in the society). They can also work in community development programmes; in industries (employed to oversee such issues as overcrowding, lighting, noise, water and air pollution, meals preparation, protective clothing and appliances). Opportunities also exist in Local, National and International Tax supported and Non-Tax supported health agencies (Red Cross/Red Crescent, Road Safety Corps, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), NAFDAC, Fire Service, Ministry of Health. World Health Organization (WHO), PATHS, UNICEF, etc. need the service of health educators in planning, execution and monitoring of health programmes. So much and yet entrapped opportunities exist in marketing and publishing as well as consultancy services.

The job opportunities open to graduates of physical education include those in above stated and similar areas of health education graduates, due mainly to the inter-relatedness of the two subject areas. Hence they can work as teachers (in nursery schools and through tertiary levels); as physiotherapists (in health and health related institutions, Staff of health agencies, Local, National and International Tax Supported and Non-Tax Supported Health Agencies like Red Cross/Red Cresent, WHO, UNICEF, Road Safety Corps, NDLEA, Ministry of Youths and Sports; Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education (both federal and state levels, all Military and Para Military organizations, Sports Councils/Directors of Sports council. Also they can work as coaches and facilitators of sports activities (at local, states and federal levels) and consultancy services (house to house physiotherapy-outdoors and indoors); Kinesiologists, and in community development (as recreational activities’ developer) among others.

Each course is assigned a specific credit hour signifying the number of hours the student is to lake the course within one week. The minimum credit hours for a semester mist not be below 15hrs and the maximum must not exceed 28 hrs if permission is obtained, otherwise it remains 24 hrs.
