DEPARTMENT of Psychology
Introduction
The Department of Psychology of the Enugu State University of Science and
Technology runs a four year standard programme both for UME and Direct
entry candidates leading to the award of B. Sc. (Honours) Drgree in Psychology.
Entry Requirements
Apart from the General Entry Requirements of the University students are
required to have at least t pass in Biology or Human Biology or Health Science
or general Science, or Agriculture Science as well as a pass in Mathematics or
statistics at the West African School Certificate Examination. GCE, (ordinary
Level, SSCE or its equivalent. Candidates for Direct Entry should possess at
least two passes at the General Certificate of Education Examination Advanced
Level) or the equivalent in any two of the following subject: Mathematics,
Biology, Chemistry, physics, geography, History, Economics, Government,
Literature-in-English, Religion, Home Economic or Health Science and
Agricultural Science, or its equivalent like OND, NCE, Nursing / Midwifery
Certificate. Also candidates for Join Matriculation Examinations should take
Biology and any other two Arts subjects including English Language.
PHILOSOPHY AND OBJECTIVES
A Degree programme in psychology seeks to fulfill a number of inter-elated
objectives:
- To ground the student in tie principles, philosophy and method of
psychological investigation of human and animal behaviour, with
emphasis on the Biological, psychological and Socio-Cultural influences.
To give students an initial training in the different professional areas that
will enable them seek and appreciate careers as psychologists in such
allied fields as education medicine, industry, prisons, administration, the
armed forces, social welfare etc, with particular reference to the needs of
Nigeria and Africa.
It is important to point out that while professionalism in psychology requires a
good postgraduate training the holder of a first degree in psychology has a lot of
chances in such employment areas as teaching and educational administration,
the health services industry and commence, prisons and armed forces, the public
service and social research.
