Philosophy and Objectives
The Programme is aimed at teaching economics to students of the department. It further deals with the application of economic principles to solving economic problems of the society. Economic research is therefore an important objective of the programme. It is designed to facilitate the learning, teaching, and research in economics. It is therefore aimed at producing graduates in economics who would be able at the completion of their studies to assume responsible positions in the various fields where sound’ knowledge of economics is required.
The students are to be exposed to the use of Mathematics and Statistics in business and other related fields and also they would be taught basic management and accounting principles, all aimed at making then very functional on graduation.
The Departmental Degree Programme and Admission
The Department admits students ‘either by entrance examination (Joint Admissions and Matriculation Examinations) for the four-year degree programme or by direct entry through the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board for the Three-year degree programme. The prospective student must satisfy both the University and Departmental entry requirements.
For the four year programme, the department requires the prospective student to possess credit in five ordinary level subjects obtained in not more than two sittings, which must include English language, Mathematics and Economics.
Direct entry candidates must possess
- Passes at Principal level in SSC or GC (A level) in at least two relevant subjects obtained alone sitting.
- NCE, HND or first Degree.
In addition, the candidate should have obtained three at Ordinary Level in subjects other than those passed at Advance Level.
Industrial Attachment
The Department of Economics requires its students to go on Industrial Attachment for a total of three months before they can graduate. It takes place during the Long Vacation following the close of the second academic session. At ESUT as emphasis is on the practical application of knowledge to the country’s developmental problems, the students are provided with the opportunity of working and learning in different industries, institutions and governmental establishment during their industrial Attachment carries credits and has the effect of bringing theoretical knowledge “face to face” with practical experience.
Research Projects
At the end of the third academic session the students, in consultation with their supervisors, select their final year projects before proceeding to the second Industrial attachment. The projects must be on subjects related to the major areas of ach student’s concentration. The writing of the fourth year, project should be between 5,000 and 8,000 words, and must follow the format prescribed by the department under the guidance of the approved supervisor.
