B.Sc. Degree Programme in Insurance

Course Duration

The Department of Insurance and Risk Management in the Faculty of Management Science offers four year degree programme leading to the Bachelor of Science degree in Insurance and Risk Management.

OBJECTIVES OF DEPARTMENT

The objectives of the department are to enable students:

  1. Appreciate the importance of the various forms of insurance as a risk management device in the society;
  2. Acquire in dept. understanding of the theory, principles and practice of insurance, with actuarial background;
  3. Operate after graduation as successful insurance executive, financial consultants, scholars and responsible citizen in the insurance industry, in government and society as a whole.

ADMISSION AND DEGREE REQUIREMENTS

Candidates seeking admission to the department by Entrance Examination must, in addition to the university minimum requirements, have passed the Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE) with credits in, at least, five subjects (including English Language Mathematics and Economics) or the General Certificate of Education Examination with passes in five papers including English, Mathematics and Economics. These credits must be obtained in not more than two sittings. Direct entry candidates must, in addition to the requirement mentioned above, have passed the approved Ordinary National Diploma or Higher National Diploma or equivalent examination in Insurance. Candidates admitted by Direct Entry will normally enroll in the second year of the programme. Stress Areas

JOB OPPORTUNITIES

Employment opportunities exist for Insurance graduates in the insurance industry at both national and international levels. They can also find positions as insurance brokers, risk surveyors, loss adjusters, adviser or consultants in almost all kinds of business and non-business organizations in the private a well as in the public sectors of the economy.

STUDENT INDUSTRIAL TRAINING

Students are required to undergo a total of six months industrial training before the end of their studies. This is to enable them acquire practical experience in the practice of insurance and a risk management generally. The first three months of the training should be done during the long vacation at the end of the second year, while the remaining portion should be done at the end of the third year, also during the long vacation.
