COLLEGE OF MEDICINE - A BRIEF PROFILE
It was in April 2005 that 185 medical students were transferred from Nsukka campus of ESUT to the spectacular complex of buildings situated beside ESUT Teaching Hospital Parklane in GRA Enugu. It was a magnificent transformation.
ESUT College of Medicine is an ultra modern institution. !l has a library complex which harbours the ICT cnter, Audio-Visual center and sections for upto- date journals, periodicals and books. There is a 350 sitting-capacity auditorium, eight science laboratories, ten lecture halls, eight seminar rooms, two hostels, a refectory and etc.
In April 2006, the College of Medicine statute was signed into law. Similarly, the law establishing ESUT Teaching Hospital Parklane was signed. ESUT College of Medicine (ESUCOM) and ESUT Teaching Hospital (ENSUTHI) constitute significant achievements in medical education and health care in the Slate.
By November 2007, the College had obtained full accreditation status from (he National University Commission (NUC).
By November 2008, the College had successfully obtained two full accreditation stains from the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) namely the Pre-Clinical and the first Clinical accreditations.
Subsequently, the College completed three 2nd MBBS, two 3rd MBBS and one 4th MBBS professional examinations. The College is now awaiting (lie final clinical accreditation by MDCN which will permit it to conduct the 5th MBBS (final) professional examination.
The total number of students has steadily risen to 258. These students have mandatory residence in 5-star hostels with self contained rooms. They arc well equipped with indoor games (Snooker & Table Tennis) and outdoor games (Volley ball & Basket ball).
The staffing of the College of Medicine is of adequate selection. There are 73 academic staff comprising of 21 Professors, 4 Readers, 11 Senior Lecturers, 30 Lecturer I, and 7 Lecturer 11. There are 17 Technical staff and 114 administrative and support staff. Every lecturer has a furnished office. The academic staff lounge, situated on the second floor of the administrative building, offers relaxation to all lecturers and consultants in the institution.
Adequate measures are in place to maintain the highest order of discipline andcommitment of both staff and students.

The vision of (his citadel of learning is to expand the scope of knowledge by leaching, research, and publication; lo produce medical personnel who arc excelled! in character, knowledge, and skill; and to transform and uplift the status of our immediate and remote society.
The Mission
The College of Medicine is designed lo be a world-class institution where excellence is (he watch word and acquisition of knowledge and skill is the paramount goal.
The Philosophy
The College of Medicine will maintain the highest standards in the mix of education and heath and will awaken and promote sensitivity in the well being of the citizens.
The Objectives
- To make the College of Medicine more responsive to the needs of the people which it serves
- To update and modify our modes and methods to be relevant to local, national, and global demands
- To have an environment where there is peaceful coexistence of staff and students and where the highest level of discipline is maintained
- To create an environment conducive to the promotion of sound scholarship and significantly improve the conditions of learning, research and publication.
- To awaken all and sundry to the needs of maintenance of infrastructure, equipments, and standards.
- To uphold the University Motto which is ‘Technology for Service’

Admission Requirements
Admission Requirements
Candidates for any mode of admission must have studied, a I the GCE ‘O’ level or its equivalent, the following subjects: -
- Physics
- Chemistry
- Biology
- English language
- Mathematics
Requirements for Entry via U.M.E. - JAMB
Candidates for admission by U.M.E, shall have
- Credit at G.C.E, ‘O’ level or the equivalent in the following subjects: -English language Mathematics Physics Chemistry Biology
- U.M.E, result in the following subjects: English, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology: with a minimum JAMB score of 170.
- Will be required to take University Post-Jamb screening test before admission.
Post-JAMB Assessment Examination
This is a university-conducted examination consists of MCQ examinations in English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Mode of selection is 45% merit, 45% LGA, and 10% discretion. Currently, admission quota is 50: - 22 by merit; 23 by LGA and 5 by discretion Successful candidates are admitted into the 100 level course at the Faculty of Applied Natural Science (FANS)
Requirements for Direct Entry
Candidates for direct entry into the 200 level shall have: -
- GCE ‘A’ level or its equivalent in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.
- Credit at G.C.E. ‘O’ level or its equivalent in the following subjects
- English language
- Mathematics
- Physics
- Chemistry
- Biology
- A degree in a related science discipline from ESUT or other recognized Universities where they have obtained a minimum of second class upper division.

FACILITIES AVAILABLE FOR MEDICAL STUDENTS
Students* Accommodation
2 hostels are available for students' accommodation (males students are in hostel I and females in hostel 2). Bach hostel can accommodate 300 students. Students live in self contained apartments with toilet am! bathroom for two. Residence for all students in (he medical compound is mandatory. A refectory for meals is available on the site.
Students’ Transportation
A 32 sitter bus, EN41A44, is available to lake students to their rural postings in Nenwe village for community medicine and primary health care. The bus also takes students to their 6 week psychiatry posting at the Federal Neuropsychiatric hospital in New Haven. Enugu and other related academic postings.
Recreational Facilities
Available in-door games are table tennis and snooker. Available outdoor games are volley ball and basket ball. Facilities for football, {rack and field sporting events are available at the stadium. Our students take part in NIMSA games and inter-university sports.
Lecture rooms
Currently there are 18 academic departments with 8 teaching laboratories, 10 classrooms and 8 seminar rooms. In addition, tutorial and seminar rooms are available in all wards in the Teaching Hospital. The College auditorium is a 350 silting capacity edifice for public lectures, conferences and College events.
Audio visual center / Medical illustration unit
The audio visual centre is situated on the ground floor of the library complex. The facilities include 3 laptops, 3 multimedia projectors, 2 transparency projectors, a slide projector, a digital camera, a standing screen and a scanner. The center has a public address system.
ICT Center
The ICT center is situated on the ground floor of the library complex. It has 20 computer systems and 2 servers all connected by network. Internet facility is in use.
Medical Library
The medical library is on the top floor of the 2 storey library building complex. The library is well slacked with current books, journals and periodicals.
Science Laboratories
- Pre-clinical Teaching laboratories: Anatomy, Biochemistry, and Physiology laboratories are available as preclinical teaching laboratories. Each laboratory is sited in the departmental floor with an adjacent classroom.
- Clinical teaching laboratories: Pharmacology, Microbiology, HaemaLology, Chemical Pathology, and Histopathology laboratories are available as the clinical teacihing laboratories. The histopathology laboratory and the mortuary are in a separate building of its own. Facilities for tissue analysis and postmortem are in place.
- Multipurpose Microscopy Laboratory (MM Lab): the MM Lab is situated in the Anatomy building complex. It is equipped with binocular and monocular microscopes. All the teaching laboratories use it in rotation.
- Service laboratories are available at the ESUT Teaching Hospital. There is coordination between the service and teaching laboratories.
Animal House
Construction of a permanent animal house has been commenced and will be completed soon. Meanwhile there is a temporary animal house in the department of Anatomy. Animal cages and racks are in place. Animals currently available are mice, rats, albino rats, guinea pigs etc. The Pharmacology department takes charge of the animal house. The chief technologist and his team take care of the animals.
Staffing
The staffing is adequate for each section. In the College there are 73 academic staff comprising, 21 Professors, 4 Readers, 11 Senior Lecturers, 30 Lecturer 1, and 7 Lecturer 11. There are 17 Technical staff and 114 administrative and support staff.
Hospital facilities
Students use ESUT Teaching Hospital Parklane for postings and clinical practice. The College and Hospital are structured into clinical departments - Community Medicine & PHC, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Medicine, Surgery, Radiology, Accident & Emergency, ENT, Ophthalmology, and Anaesthesia. The medical department includes Dermatology and Cardiology. Students do 6 weeks of Psychiatry at the Federal Neuro-Psychiatry hospital, Enugu. The Surgery department includes Paediatric Surgery, Urology, Orthopaedics and Plastic surgery.
The teaching hospital is well equipped With X-ray and ultrasound facilities, service laboratories, outpatient facilities, operating theaters, recovery room, intensive Care unit and wards for the various disciplines.
To supplement the regular water and electricity in the entire complex of ESUCOM & ENSUTH, there is a central 500 K.VA generator and 4 giant water tanks. In addition each department or unit has its own generator and water tank.
Accident & Emergency Complex
There is a befitting Accident and Emergency complex, newly built and equipped. It is already in use. Students are exposed to the procedures of modem emergency medicine.
