INTRODUCTION
In realization of the need for students to be acquainted with the programmes and activities of the University system, a handbook is considered crucial. The Department of Technology and Vocational Education was carved out from the former Department of Science and Technical Education in 1998/99 session. Since then an attempt was made to articulate a standard four, three and two year programmes for all the three options of the department. This handbook therefore is a dream that has become a reality.
The Department of Technology and Vocational Education has a mission of implementing the Nigerian National Policy on Education at the tertiary level. The Policy stipulates that for effective and efficient implementation of Technology Education section of the policy, technology and Vocational teachers are needed. The objective of ESUT is to be responsive to the needs of the society and this is manifested in its motto, “skill for services’. Consequently, the Department of Technology and Vocational Education, therefore exists to produce highly knowledgeable and skilled teachers for the successful implementation of the current and future policies in education at the tertiary level.
These teachers are expected to teach pre-technology, prevocational, as well as technology and Vocational subjects at the post primary school level and beyond. In other words, these teachers should have adequate creative and innovative ability to continuously pursue excellence in their delivery of education generally and technology and vocational education in particular.
BUILDING/WOODWORK, ELECTRICITY/ELECTRONICS AND MECHANICAL/INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY
These programmes prepare students for teaching and leadership positions in post primary institutions, government establishments and industries.
Every undergraduate of the Department takes courses in Education, General studies and Computer Science and as well as specializing in any one of the three options. On successful Completion of the degree programme, it is expected that a graduate of the department would have been sufficiently equipped to:
- Teach with adequate professional skills one of the specialized technology subjects in the Nigeria Post Primary Institutions;
- Perform, administrative and supervisory duties within the country’s educational system with particular reference to his or her teaching subject areas;
- Continue advanced studies in technology education and or in his or her subject of specialization.
