ACADEMIC PROGRAMME FOR PGD AND MBA IN BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION

PHILOSOPHY

The growing sophistication in today's world in which our country Nigeria is a part of is bringing with it more challenges that will call for high caliber academic/ business practitioners. Technological, economic, cultural and other facts being brought closer daily by modern transportation and telecommunication competition in all its ramification is getting tighter.

  1. Locally, the problems of higher degree in management with emphasis in business Administration are needed more than ever before, as our nation prepares itself to join the industrialized society.
  2. There is also a greater need now for interest in academic as a career.
  3. The National University Commission (NUC), the nation's policy making body for tertiary education has stressed guidelines for qualifications needed for academic positions in our universities degree.
  4. More than enough, the need for our internal staff development can be buttressed if we have our programme which will accommodate the quest for higher academic qualifications.

The post-graduate programme at post-graduate Diploma and MBA are old enough; dating back to 1985/86. In summary, therefore, a PGD or MBA in business in Administration at the Enugu State University of Science and Technology will help to satisfy the national need as well as our internal need as presented above.

Objectives of The PGD and MBA Programmes:

The Programmes arte expected to pursue the following objectives:-

  1. Train manpower up to MBA level to take up managerial functions and academic leadership in their respective fields.
  2. Develop requisite skills and expertise in management of both private and public enterprises.
  3. The programme will develop students and arm them with analytical ability needed to meet the growing challenges of present and future Nigeria and international business environment.

Master of Business Administration (MBA)

Duration of Study:

The minimum duration shall be twelve calendar months for full time and twenty four calendar months for time.

Mode of study:

The programmes are by both course work and project/dissertation.

  1. To graduate, a student must pass all the prescribed courses and present and successfully defend his/her project/dissertation at the prescribed pass levels.
  2. The programme is both part-time and full time.

Research Facilities:

  1. Primary:

We had earlier noted that a researcher must show evidence of originality and pragmatism in his/her work. Nigeria as a developing country is engulfed in myriad of management problems hence or public and private enterprises have become waste pipes. This Department wants to train both PGD and MBA candidates who will undertake primary research, not copy-work, in all aspects of management and come up with recommendations that can be truly termed original. Therefore, they must be able to source primary information through imaginative interviews.

  2. Secondary:
Libraries, the world over, are known sources of information. The MBA candidates for the Department will have at their disposal – the ESUFT Library, UNEC Library, the National Archives, the National Library, the British Council Library and their individual libraries to help them in thir research references.

NUMBER OF CANDIDATES PER SUPERVISOR:

In order to ensure that a research project receives the due attention of the project Supervisor, the Department very strongly recommend that no Supervisor should supervise more than seven (7) MBA candidates and 15 PGD per session. This maybe in conflict with the NUC recommendations, but the Department feels that such recommendations are not meant to be static but are subject to changes contingent on the exigencies of the times.
