History

The courses offered in the Department are structured in such a way that students undertaking them establish a core and sound basic knowledge in the area of Finance, Economics, Accounting, statistics methods, Banking and non – Banking, and Financial intermediaries. This provides the students with a sound foundation for entrance into the post graduate programmes in Banking and Finance and related fields. The Department also demands an intimate and productive linkage between the academic department and the twin industry – the banks, non – bank financial institutions, insurance companies, government ministries and parastatas. To meet this demand, undergraduate students are required to undertake an industrial attachment for a period of six months in these employment environments to be completed within three long vocations. This affords the students a rare opportunity to blend their financial management theory with practice.

 

EXAMINATION

Lecturers have the freedom to teach and examine students , Subject to control at the Departmental Board of Examiners , the Faculty Board of Examiners ,and the Senate, degree are subjects to external moderation - of both the questions as to their quality, and the grading as to their objectivity and consistency.

ACADEMIC ATMOSPHERE

The Department as a matter of policy encourages the development of a proper academic atmosphere through the publication production of student's journals, holding of Seminars and Workshops. Currently, we are developing students Library at the Departmental level in conjunction with the students. Industrial attachment and close contacts with professional bodies helps the students maintain not just a high academic level but also a professional edge.

OBJECTIVES

The students majoring in Banking and Finance as per syllabus detailed below, establishes a core of the basic knowledge in the arrear of accounting , statistical methods, banking, insurance, marketing etc. this will prepare the student to specialize in areas of Banking and Finance that will provide a rage opportunity and ability to the candidate for blending financial management theory with practice with a view to finding practical solutions to the economic and financial problems confronting developing economics, including the Nigerian economy.

A Banking and Finance graduate is well prepared for a broad range of professional careers which include management positions in banks, insurance companies, stock exchange, business, industry, Government etc. Also, the course provides an excellent training for further studies leading to post-graduate studies like MBA or MA/MSC and PHD degree programmes in Finance Economics, Financial Management, Banking, Accountancy, Research Assignment, etc.

REQUIREMENT FOR OBTAINING DEGREE:

Students must pass all the course shown in the programme before the y are awarded B.Sc Degree in Banking and Finance. Another requirement is that a period of six months' Industrial attachment in Financial establishments or other Industries must be completed within the three long vacation periods by students.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

Apart from the University entry requirements, a credit level pass in Mathematics and a credit in English Language of the West African School Certificate Examination or the General Certificate of Education (Ordinary Level) Examination is required for admission to the Department, plus credit in Economics.

DIRECT ENTRY:

Candidate with OND in Finance or related disciplines may be directly admitted into the Department to do a three year Degree Programme starting from year two.

Candidates, who in addition to the basic requirements possess at least Advance level passes in two papers which must include Economics, Accountancy or Business Method/Commerce may be admitted for a three year programme in Banking and Finance starting from year two.
