Dept. of Animal Science/Fisheries Management

Preamble

The wealth of any Nation is measured by the level of development of her livestock industry. The department of Animal/Fisheries Science Management offers courses which have been designed to develop scientists with a broad knowledge of the fundamentals and applied sciences common to all farm animals and their products, as well as the principles of animal production and fisheries. Graduates of this department are therefore the pillars upon which sustainable national development can be built.

The department caters for the branch of agriculture concerned with the teaching of courses such as:

  • ANIMAL NUTRITION
  • FEED RESOURCES AND FEED MILL TECHNOLOGY
  • ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY
  • HEALTH AND DISEASE CONTROL
  • GENETICS AND ANIMAL BREEDING
  • BIOTECHNOLOGY
  • ANIMAL & FISH PRODUCTION AND MANAGEMENT
  • PASTURE PRODUCTION & RANGE MANAGEMENT
  • HYDROBIOLOGY & WATER POLLUTION CONTROL.

Objectives

The overall objectives of the programme is to train students to acquire skill and competence for services as animal scientists and fisheries specialists. Graduates of this programme will serve as a major source of manpower for the following establishments. :

  • The Livestock Industry
  • Government Ministries and Parastatals.
  • International Organizations which emphasize Animal/Fisheries production
  • Agricultural Departments of Commercial Banks
  • Universities and other Educational and Research Establishment & above all, graduates of the department of Animal / Fisheries Science Management are better equipped to establish their own business.
